Flashback. Return to Cluj
Moscow 1995 versus Romania of the 21st century: a seemingly random meeting of two projects created by photographer Miron Zownir in an exhibition dedicated to the Art Museum of Cluj-Napoca. “Romania Raw’s” photo selection marks Miron Zownir’s experience in Romania during his 2018 residency as an invited artist by Visual Kontakt gallery in partnership with the German Cultural Center in Cluj-Napoca. Zownir’s artistic initiative has made it possible to penetrate the unaltered intimacy of the Roma community living in Pata Rât and other places in Romania. In this exhibition, the “Romania Raw” project is backed by sequences of the “Down and Out in Moscow” series which sheds light on people that lived and events that took place in Moscow in 1995, an extremely tense year for Boris Yeltsin’s Russia. With both projects, Miron Zownir captures moments that he can be a part of, and becomes witness to extreme situations that reveal the pure psychological state of the individual which, consequently, facilitates the viewer’s access to an irreducible reality.
The exhibition is curated by Olimpia Bera, managed by Alexandra Sârbu, and organized by the University for Art and Design, the German Cultural Center, and the Art Museum of Cluj-Napoca. It coincides with the publication of a catalogue of Zownir’s “Romania Raw” project by PogoBooks.
Due to the extraordinary situation caused by the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic and the european travel restrictions in force, there will be no opening reception for the exhibition entitled “Flashback. Return to Cluj ”. However, the exhibition will be accessible to the public for the entire duration of the period November 5 - 29, 2020, from Wednesday to Sunday inclusive, between 10 AM and 5 PM. The last entry ticket will be issued at 4:30 PM.
