ROMANIA RAW by MIRON ZOWNIR Vernissage & Book Launch

Friday, 2020 October 2nd /// 6pm

The photo bookstore and gallery  BILDBAND BERLIN, founded in 2015 by Joe Dilworth  and  Thomas Gust, is a magnet for photo lovers from all over the world and an inspiring place within the Berlin photo scene.

During this year's Month of Photography, BILDBAND BERLIN is presenting an exhibition of original photographs from the ROMANIA RAW series by the German-Ukrainian documentary photographer MIRON ZOWNIR, which was created in Romania in 2018, as well as his newly published photo book of the same name

For ‘Romania Raw’ (2018), Miron Zownir photographed Roma settlements near Cluj-Napoca in Romania. Since being expelled from the city in 2010, several hundred Roma families have lived here on the landfill site of Pata Rat, the largest garbage ghetto in Europe. Everyday poisoning, isolation, and resignation are the defining themes of these photographs.

Zownir's radical style of photography, honed since the late 1970s, first in West Berlin and then in New York, remains to this day a benchmark in the field of social and artistic photo documentation. His black-and-white photographs of subcultures, social outcasts, and other marginalized groups prove controversial, time after time. His work is represented in leading galleries and museums, worldwide, and is available in several extensive monographs.

His new photo book ROMANIA RAW - a handmade artist's book, published by GOETHE INSTITUT CLUJ NAPOCA and Pogo Books, limited to 120 numbered and hand-signed copies - will be presented to the public during the opening reception on Friday, October 2nd.

Duration of Exhibition: 02. Oktober- 31. Oktober 2020

Immanuelkirchstr. 33, 10405 Berlin
